Face
The base to any make up look, whether it be dramatic or minimalist, is to have clean and glowing healthy looking skin.
If you are not blessed with a naturally clear complexion, there are many different ways in which you can fake it!
Base
First things first, girls!
You need to take care of your skin! If you are not looking after your skin, make up wont 'sit well' and the look is very unnatural. To look after your skin, you need to cleanse and moisturise twice a day to keep skin clean and supple.
Bases consist of foundation, concealear and powder. When it comes to bases, there are many different types, which can make things very confusing. Everyones face and skin has its own personality and so finding a product that suits you is very important. If you have a clear complexion and like bare skin then foundation is probably not for you. However there are several other types which may interest you.
Foundation
- Compact Creme foundations gives the most coverage.
- Liquid foundation gives a light to medium coverage depending on formula.
- Sheer foundation gives a light coverage.
- Tinted Moisturisers give a wash of colour with little coverage.
Barry M recommends Foundation Crème, our fanstatic versatile foundation, to satisfy your base foundation needs.
Getting the right shade
- When testing out a new colour, test it in natural light (not shop lights) on the skin along your jaw line. If the shade disappears then you have picked the perfect shade, if it doesn't,keep trying different colours until you find the right shade.
- As a general rule foundations with a yellow base look more natural, especially on skin with red tones as the yellow neutralises this. Pinky tone foundations suit fair skin, but again, treat your skin as an individual when picking the shade.
- Skin changes colour throughout the year in summer and winter so you may need to change the colour of your base to follow this.
- The texture of your skin can also change throughout the year, perhaps becoming drier in winter or if you sit in an air conditioned room or oilier in the sun. In your skin becomes dry, make sure you moisturise well before applying your foundation
Powder
- Powders can be used to combat shine as well as creating a smooth and velvety appearance. They provide light translucent coverage to enhance your skins appearance. For Oily skin, pressed powder is the best bet. If you have very oily skin, use a leaf of blotting paper to remove most of the oil, then apply the powder.
Barry M also recommends our ulta fine Translucent Powder
Bronzers
- Bronzers add a healthy glow to a complexion to give that 'back from the beach' look.
- Bronzers come in different varieties-from traditional powders to gels and creams. Powders can come with or without shimmer and are applied with a brush, gels can be applied with fingers or a sponge.
Tips for applying bronzers
- To apply powder, use a large brush and dust the powder over the brow bones, temple, bridge of he nose, your cheek and chin. These are the places where the sun hits your face when you tan.
- Dust bronzer lightly around the hairline to create a natural finish.
- When choosing the colour of your bronzer, never use a colour that is darker than your chest. Your face tans naturally at a shade lighter than the rest of your body.
- If you are getting a streaky finish, try applying bronzer on the top of foundation or powder to create a more even base.
- Make your bronzer work hard and double it up to use as an eyeshadow.
- Gel and cream bronzers give a more 'moist' finish and reflect the light more. This means that they more closely resemble the skins natural appearance.
- Finally, dont forget to blend, blend and blend! Blend at the jaw line and down the neck as this is the most common place for tell tale lines.
